About
Hi, I’m Matthew Ellis—co-founder of the Fiordland Equestrian Thoroughbred Rehabilitation Program (FETRP) and a disabled veteran. I found my way into the horse world just a few years ago, and it quickly became something much more than a new interest. Each horse has its own personality, its own story—and the bonds they form with people are powerful and deeply healing. While our mission at FETRP is to help retired racehorses transition into new lives, I’ve also found my own sense of therapy and rehabilitation through working with them. This program isn’t just about second chances for horses—it’s about healing, connection, and purpose for all of us involved.
As Director of Operations at FETRP, I help manage the day-to-day logistics that keep the program running smoothly—from coordinating horse care and managing supplies to handling transport logistics and supporting adoption efforts. But the most meaningful moments still happen in the barn—watching a once-anxious horse start to relax, or seeing one head off to a new, caring home. Those quiet victories are what make this work so rewarding.
It’s an honor to be part of the journey for each horse that comes into our care. I’m grateful every day to help shape a future where these incredible animals are seen, valued, and given the opportunity to thrive in their new homes.
